For Sale: Russell Jennings Auger Bits

Here we have a variety of Russell Jennings-style auger bits, tuned up and ready to bore. I’m an Irwin fan, myself, but these would have made a convert of me if I needed bits. All have single-threaded lead screws. All were tested in 8/4 swamp white oak.

A. An unmarked No. 12 with dark, even patina. I was concerned at first because the two spurs had been very slightly beveled along the outside, but surprisingly, my test bore was clean and quick with no binding. $3 sold.

B. A No. 16 with a single spur. The mark is not one I know – Dennis, maybe? (Leave a comment if you recognize it!) Some surface rust from sitting unused. $3

C. A later No. 16 with two spurs, marked “Russell Jennings Quick Boring.” This and the No. 12 above would make a solid start to a user kit. Ready to go. $3 sold.

D. Three stubby single-spur No. 13s. Each marked Russell Jennings. The oldest of the three has a chip out of the cutting edge, which should work out with additional filing. Despite the chip, it performed the best of these three. $2 each. (The oldest is sold.)

Sold: Stanley No. 18 Knuckle-Cap Block Plane

This is an earlier model with the Excelsior body style. There is little to no nickel left on the first generation knuckle cap, but it’s starting to show a nice patina. Japanning at 90%. The iron is a much later Stanley, with just a little bit of life in it. No eccentric lever. $25 marked down to $20.
